JoSAA Counselling 2025: Dates, Registration, Eligibility, Choice Filling, Seat Allotment, Cutoff, Seat Matrix

JoSAA counselling is a national level admission process conducted to choose students for 121 institutes across the country, including 23 IITs, 31 NITs, IIEST Shibpur 26 IIITs, and 40 other Government Funded Technical Institutes. The offer of admissions is filled by these institutes simultaneously based on rank from a single platform. Candidates should also note that there is a large number of seats available in the IITs and other institutes, placing them in the public domain from a single place. 

While admissions to NITs, IIESTs, IIITs, and other Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs) will be based on JEE Main 2025 ranks, IITs will take into account JEE Advanced 2025 ranks. The JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) counseling process is open to candidates who pass either JEE Main or JEE Advanced.

Following the release of the JEE Main & JEE Advanced 2025 results, the JoSAA counseling procedure will start. To be considered for seat allocation, eligible candidates must register for JoSAA counseling and finish the choice-filling process. The distribution of seats will be decided by the ranks of the candidates, the preferences they have expressed, and the number of seats available.

The JoSAA counselling procedure will be held in 5 rounds. In the main round, the counselling process will be held, followed by the contact rounds. In the event that the seats are not fully filled, the remaining applicants can only participate in these two extra rounds. Besides these 5 regular rounds, two specific or supernumerary rounds are held locally. Before the online guiding procedure, all eligible applicants must sign themselves in. Every process is important to read well. Candidates should clearly realize that they must first fill in the application form to move ahead with the registration process.

Admission Overview for IITs, NIT+ System, and Other Technical Institutes Based on JEE 2025

Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs or Triple-I-Ts), Schools of Planning and Architecture (SPAs), and other government-funded technical institutes in India offer a range of technical programs. The admission in these institutes is based on two competitive examinations: JEE (Advanced) and JEE (Main) 2024.

• Eligibility and Admission Process for IITs

For admissions to IITs, candidates must qualify in the JEE Advanced 2025 exam. Only candidates who pass this examination and meet any additional IIT-specific criteria are eligible for admission to B.Tech courses.

• Eligibility and Admission Process for NIT+ System and Other Institutes

The NIT+ System, which includes NITs, IIEST, IIITs, SPAs, and a few additional government-funded technical institutes (Other-GFTIs), offers admissions based on the JEE (Main) 2025 examination. The following qualifying examinations apply:

JoSAA Counseling Process 2025: From Registration to Seat Allocation

Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counseling process 2025 enables candidates to seek admission into B.Tech & B.Arch programs offered by the IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. Below is a detailed guide to the JoSAA counseling process, starting from registration through to seat allocation.

Registration for JoSAA Counseling

The first step in the JoSAA counseling process is registration. Candidates who have qualified in JEE Main 2025 and JEE Advanced 2025 are eligible for JoSAA counseling. The registration process includes the following steps:

• Eligibility Criteria

• JEE (Main) Qualified Candidates: Must have secured a rank in the JEE (Main) exam to participate in the counseling for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
• JEE (Advanced) Qualified Candidates: Must have secured a rank in JEE (Advanced) to participate in counseling for IITs.

Candidates who meet both JEE (Main) and JEE (Advanced) eligibility criteria can register for JoSAA counseling.

• JoSAA Registration Steps

• Go to the official JoSAA portal (www.josaa.nic.in).
• New users need to create a JoSAA account by providing basic information like name, email, phone number, and JEE exam roll number.
• After registration, candidates can log in to the portal using their credentials.
• Fill in personal details such as the candidate’s category, gender, and other relevant information.
• Candidates need to fill in their choice of institutes and programs based on their preferences.

Choice Filling and Locking

After registration, candidates must select the courses and institutions where they wish to seek admission.

A. Choice Filling

Candidates can choose from the various IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs along with the programs they wish to pursue.

The order of choices reflects the priority. Candidates should arrange their choices in descending order of preference.

B. Locking Choices

After filling in the preferences, candidates must lock their choices to confirm their selection. If the choices are not locked, the system will automatically lock them after the deadline. Make sure to lock choices before the last date to avoid losing preferences.

Seat Allotment Process

JoSAA counseling process involves multiple rounds of seat allotment. Each round consists of seat allocation based on candidates’ ranks, preferences, and availability of seats.

A. Seat Allotment

• Based on the All India Rank (AIR) of candidates, their category (General, OBC, SC, ST, etc.), and their preferences, the system allocates seats.
• Seat allotment results are announced after each round. Candidates can check the status of their allotment by logging into the JoSAA portal.
• JoSAA counseling includes 5 rounds of seat allocation. In each round, the system considers the availability of seats in different institutes and the preferences submitted by candidates.

B. Seat Acceptance

After the seat allotment, candidates need to confirm their acceptance.

Online Acceptance: Candidates must log in to the JoSAA portal to accept their allotted seat. They can also opt for “Freeze,” “Float,” or “Slide” options:

• Freeze: Accept the offered seat and no further changes will be made.
• Float: Accept the offered seat but remain open for a better option in the next round.
• Slide: Accept the seat in the same institute but change the course if a better option is available in the next round.

Verification Process in JoSAA Counselling 2025

JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) counseling process includes an important verification phase, especially for candidates with specific circumstances. This section outlines the verification requirements for different categories of candidates:

A. Requirement for Independent Re-Verification

• If a candidate who accepts a seat in the NIT+ System is later allocated a seat in an IIT (or vice versa) in further rounds, the candidate must undergo re-verification.
• Candidates are advised to log in to the JoSAA portal to check for any raised queries related to verification. If there are any queries, the candidate must respond within the specified time to avoid cancellation of the seat.
• Once a new seat is allocated in the IIT/NIT+ system, the previous seat is automatically cancelled. The candidate is not required to manually cancel the previous seat.
• Failure to respond to verification queries within the stipulated timeline will lead to the rejection of the allocated seat, and the candidate will be excluded from further participation in the JoSAA 2025 process.

B. Physical Verification for PwD Candidates (IITs)

• PwD candidates who do not possess a valid UDID card indicating permanent disability are required to undergo physical verification at one of the IIT centers.
• If the online verification of the UDID card fails, candidates must appear for physical verification.
• The verification process begins on June 10, 2024, and continues through the counseling rounds. The candidate must choose a reporting center and time slot two days in advance.
• The physical verification must be completed by the end of the counseling round in which the candidate is allocated a seat.

C. Physical Verification for PwD Candidates (NIT+ System)

• PwD candidates without a valid UDID card are required to visit a reporting center for physical verification.
• Candidates whose UDID card verification fails or who are allocated a seat in a restricted program must appear for physical verification.
• The verification process starts in June, 2025, and continues throughout the counseling rounds. Candidates must choose a verification center and a time slot in advance.
• Verification must be completed by the end of the counseling round in which the candidate is allocated a seat. Failing to do so will result in the seat being cancelled.

D. Physical Verification for Persons with Less than 40% Disability and Difficulty in Writing (IITs)

• Candidates who have less than 40% disability and difficulty in writing, who have used compensatory time or scribes, must undergo physical verification.
• The verification process begins in June, 2025, and continues throughout the counseling rounds. Candidates must register on the JoSAA portal and select a verification center, date, and time.
• Candidates must complete the physical verification by the end of the counseling round in which they are allocated a seat. Failure to do so will result in the cancellation of the allocated seat.

E. Physical Verification for Persons with Less than 40% Disability and Difficulty in Writing (NIT+ System)

• Candidates with less than 40% disability and difficulty in writing, who seek a seat in the NIT+ system, must undergo physical verification.
• The verification starts in June, 2025, and continues through the counseling rounds. Candidates are required to choose a reporting center and time for physical verification.
• Verification must be completed by the end of the counseling round in which the candidate is allocated a seat. Failure to complete this process will result in the seat being cancelled.

• Candidates must plan their travel to ensure they complete the physical verification by the end of the relevant counseling round.
• By adhering to the above processes, candidates can ensure that their seats are confirmed in the JoSAA counseling process without any complications.

Freeze, Float, and Slide options in the JoSAA 2025 seat allocation process

• Options Overview:

• Freeze: Accept the allocated seat and do not wish to participate in further rounds. The seat will be confirmed if all requirements are met.
• Float: Accept the allocated seat, but if a higher preference program is available in subsequent rounds, the candidate will accept it. Otherwise, they will retain the current seat.
• Slide: Accept the allocated seat, but if a program of higher preference within the same institute is offered in subsequent rounds, the candidate will accept it.

• Eligibility for Options:

• Freeze option is mandatory if a candidate is allocated their first choice.
• Float and Slide options are only available if a candidate is not allocated their first choice.
• These options are not available in the last round of JoSAA 2025.

• Changing Options:

• Candidates can change from Float to Slide or Freeze at any point, except in the last round.
• Once a candidate opts for Freeze, it cannot be changed in subsequent rounds.

• Consequences of Rejection:

• If a candidate rejects an offer from the Float or Slide options, they will not be eligible for further rounds of JoSAA 2025.

• Re-Checking and Reporting:

• Candidates must report to the admitting institute for final admission and certification checks.
• Failure to meet the admission criteria at the institute will result in cancellation of the seat.
• Candidates must pass biometric verification at IITs to finalize admission.

• Seat Withdrawal Process:

• The candidate must log in to the JoSAA portal and submit a request for withdrawal by uploading a duly signed declaration form within the prescribed timeline.
• An OTP will be sent to the candidate’s mobile number and email ID. The candidate must use this OTP to confirm their withdrawal and acknowledge that this will cancel their seat and exclude them from further rounds.
• The reporting officer will verify the uploaded documents:
• If everything is in order, the withdrawal request will be accepted.
• If there are issues with the documentation or response, the request may be rejected or a query may be raised for additional information.
• Candidates can check the status of their withdrawal request on the JoSAA portal and download the approval/rejection letter.
• If rejected, the candidate can submit a new request with proper documentation before the end of the fourth round.
• Candidates can cancel their withdrawal request before it is accepted by the reporting officer by logging into the JoSAA portal and confirming the cancellation via OTP.

• Final Seat Allotment and Admission Confirmation

At the end of the final round, candidates must confirm their admission by reporting to the allotted institute. Once the process is complete, the seat is confirmed, and the candidate can begin their academic journey.

Partial Admission Fee (PAF) [For NIT+ System Only]:

After the 5th round of JoSAA 2025, candidates who are provisionally allocated a seat in the NIT+ System must pay the Partial Admission Fee (PAF) in addition to the Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF).

Consequences of Non-Payment:

JoSAA Counselling for Foreign Nationals and PIOs (Persons of Indian Origin)

1. Foreign Nationals and PIOs in IITs:

• Foreign Tag: Candidates who are not Indian nationals (whether by birth or naturalized), including those holding OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) and PIO (Person of Indian Origin) cards, are assigned the Foreign tag for the purpose of seat allocation in IITs.
• Reservation: Foreign nationals and PIOs are not eligible for any reservations such as GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, or PwD categories. This means that they do not benefit from the reserved seats allocated for these categories.
• Supernumerary Seats: The seats allocated to foreign nationals and PIOs are supernumerary, meaning they are in addition to the seats reserved for Indian nationals. These seats are not limited by category but are open to all foreign nationals based on merit.
• Seat Allocation Process: Foreign nationals are allotted seats after the seat allocation for all Indian national candidates has been completed. They must have a rank that is equal to or better than the closing rank for the GEN category in that academic program to be considered for seat allocation.
• Supernumerary Seat Limits: The total number of supernumerary seats for foreign nationals in each IIT is capped at up to 10% of the total seats in that program.
• No Separate Seats for Females: There are no specific supernumerary seats or sub-categories for female candidates within the foreign national supernumerary seats.

2. Foreign Nationals and PIOs in NIT+ System:

• Foreign Tag and Eligibility: Like in IITs, candidates who are not Indian nationals, including those with OCI/PIO status (acquired after 04.03.2021), are assigned the Foreign tag for NITs, IIITs (Triple-I-Ts), IIEST, and Other GFTIs.
• Seat Allocation: Foreign nationals are not eligible for seat allocation through JoSAA to the NIT+ System, as their seat allocation is handled separately. However, to be considered for admission, they must meet the eligibility criteria of the GEN category and be within the CRL (Common Rank List).
• Supernumerary Seats: The seats allocated to foreign nationals are supernumerary and are filled only after the seat allocation for Indian national candidates is completed in each round.
• Eligibility for Foreign Nationals: Foreign nationals must have a rank within the CRL that is equal to or better than the closing rank of the GEN category candidate in that program to secure a seat.
• Supernumerary Seat Limit: The total number of seats allotted to foreign nationals in the NIT+ system is also capped at up to 10% of the total number of seats in each program.
